The built-in engine spawns a process per command; supplying one moves every layer above it — snapshots, queries, handles — to a tmux reached however you reach it. See
libtmux/enginefor what an engine owes its caller.Server.watch()andServer.connect()refuse when an engine is present because their observer is a local tmux process.
